Holly’s knowledge of cars surprised Caleb. She knew at least as much as he did, if not more. They discussed her love of old cars, how it had come about, and how she knew so much. It was all thanks to her grandfather and her father, both of whom loved cars and passed that love onto Holly.

One subject bled into another, and Caleb asked her more questions to get her to talk. She told him about her multiple attempts at school—regular and culinary—and her decision to open the baking and book shop. She even hinted at the problems the shop was having and how she hoped Caleb’s party would bail her out. After a moment of awkward silence, she turned the subject to him, insisting he tell her why he’d chosen to act as a profession.

Caleb laughed and shook his head. “You don’t want to hear about that. It’s old news. You can probably Google it.”

“I have Googled it,” Holly replied. “But I want to hear it from you.”

He rolled his eyes, but he found he wanted to tell her. “Both of my brothers are bodyguards.”

“Both of them? I thought it was just Alex.”

“Nope,” Caleb said. “Alex and Rylan are both bodyguards. I hung out with them a few times while they worked on small stuff like on-set protection. I got bit by the acting bug. One of Alex’s clients pulled some strings and got me a small part in one of his movies. I think I was eighteen or nineteen. Next thing I knew, I had an agent and piles of scripts coming to the house. I had my pick of anything I wanted to do. The rest is history.”

“I think you’re being modest.” Holly smiled, reached across the seat, and squeezed his hand. “You wouldn’t have the career you do without a lot of hard work. It couldn’t have been easy.”

She had no idea. The stress had taken its toll, and it had nearly destroyed him. But it wasn’t something he was ready to discuss with Holly. Not when they’d only know each other for a short time. He still wasn’t sure she liked him. She’d had fun with his family, but how she felt about him was still a mystery.

Caleb focused on the road, occasionally sneaking glances at Holly out of the corner of his eye. According to his family, she wasn’t his type. Rylan—the family spokesperson—made a point of pulling him aside after dinner to ask him about Holly. Her ability to stand her ground around the Peters family surprised them. They weren’t used to him being with someone who was smart, driven, and sarcastic.

“We like her,” Rylan told him. “It’s just that she’s not the type of girl you usually date.”

His brothers and the rest of the world thought his type was the into-herself, stuck-up diva princess, not a reserved, bookish baker who owned her own business. Of course, he had no one to blame for that except himself; he’d spent years cultivating an image, and that image included dating some of Hollywood’s most sought after women.
